Frankenjura is one of the most famous climbing destinations in Germany. It is known for its pocket climbing on short and powerful routes surrounded by a beautiful forest. With its many crags close to each other, it is an ideal destination for a climbing trip by bike.
How to get there
We travelled by train from Innsbruck to Pegnitz, which takes between 4-5 hours. During the journey, you must change trains first in Munich and then in Nürnberg. From the station in Pegnitz, you cycle 170 hm uphill and 230 hm downhill in about one hour to the well known ‘Bärenschlucht’, where we stayed for one week. You can find the cycling route here:
Where to stay
We stayed at the campsite in Bärenschlucht, as it is very close to various crags. However, there are also other campsites available and if you don't want to carry all the camping gear, there are also plenty of apartments in this area.
How to reach the crag(s)
Some of Frankenjura's finest crags can be reached very well by foot or bike from the campsite, including sunny crags for early and late season and shady, north-facing walls for the warmer months. The campsite is located right beneath the famous climbing crag "Bärenschluchtwände", but also a lot of other crags can be reached easily by foot within 5-20 minutes like Trockauer Wand, Püttlacher Wand, Ringlerwand, Erinnerungswand and many others. Within a bike ride of max. 30 mins, a lot of additional crags around Pottenstein, Behringersmühle and Gössweinstein can be reached, e.g. Marientaler Wände, Schlossbergwände (including a steep but short climb by bike), and many others.
Tips
On a rest day, you can take walks in the beautiful Franconian towns like Pottenstein, which takes only 10 minutes to reach by bike.
A supermarket can be reached in 20 minutes from the campsite, and you can also have dinner in a restaurant right on the campsite.
