Climbing trip to Finale Ligure (Italy) by public transport

For me, Finale Ligure is one of the most beautiful climbing spots I have visited so far! It is less crowded than Arco and has a vast variety of routes for sport climbing and multipitch climbing. I went there with a friend in the summer in June, which was nice. As you can find some sectors in the forest it’s also fine for warmer temperatures. But if you have the opportunity to go there in the spring or at the end of the summer, the temperature might be even better for climbing. During our stay we enjoyed this amazing spot a lot.

How to get there

There are many options how to get to Finale Ligure. We took the train from Munich, first to Verona, then to Milano and then further on to Finale Ligure Marina, which took us 11.5 hours in total. As soon as you reach the train station Finale Ligure Marina, you can take the bus to the direction of Feglino. The bus leaves directly at the train station in Finale Ligure Marina and goes through Finalborgo, the beautiful old part of Finale. From Feglino, you can reach the the campsite BaseCamp Cucco by walking: It's just 2km from the village and about 150hm up the hill, so it is a 30 minutes walk on small gravel roads with little traffic to the campsite.

Another option is to go from Munich to Zurich first and than continue to Milano and then further on to Finale Ligure Marina. It's a bit faster (10h 45min) and makes more sense if you start your journey from the (south)west of Germany for example.

Where to stay

We stayed at the campsite BaseCamp Cucco, which I can recommend a lot! It's a small campsite directly at the crag Monte Cucco, even with some training possibilities for climbing. It's a calm place, the owners are friendly and relaxed and they even provide you some topos of the climbing spots nearby. If you do not want to bring your camping gear, there are also apartments available in Finale or Finalborgo.

How to reach the crag(s)

Starting from the campsite, the closest crags are Monte Cucco Settore Centrale, Campanile and Fenia - Anfiteatro, which are part of the sector Monte Cucco. It takes only five to ten minutes by foot to reach these spots. In total, there are 12 sectors with nearly 300 routes and all of them can be reached by foot from the BaseCamp Cucco. You can find more information here.

Tips

On a rest day or on the hot summer days you can go for a hike in the forest, or take the bus to the coast, or visit one of the nice old towns like Finalborgo.

The closest supermarket is a small shop, which is called Nicolรฒ Toscano. It's 25 minutes by foot from the campsite. If you're looking for a bigger supermarket the closest ones are in Finalborgo and Finale Ligure.

How to book the trip

The price from Munich to Finale Ligure is about 80-100โ‚ฌ and we booked our tickets online at DB. The price varies depending on how far in advance you book the ticket. You don't need to book any tickets for the local busses in advance, just buy them directly in the bus.
